Brouwerij Van Viven – Smoked Porter – 4 out of 7

Viven Smoked Porter

This beer comes in an 11.2oz bottle for $3 or $4 which is a bit steep, but I’m willing to pay for quality. One thing that I did not want to pay for was the 50 million little floaty thingies all swirling around in my glass. I even have a technique called ‘no blubs’ that is proven to reduce floaty thingies from getting in my beer (which is yeast, I hope), however, when you’re dealing with 50 million, even the most steady hands are a futile remedy. Once poured, I picked up the glass and held it right up against at my eye and looked directly at the sun. Nothing but a thin red line of light was able to make it through. George Hamilton made an appearance with his tan head. (It’s always nice to see him.) The smell held notes of peat and ash which isn’t the most highly sought after, but it could be handled better, and those notes made their way directly into the taste. The floaties bothered me. I drank all the floaties. I’ll remain vigilant with the hopes of finding this on tap, Viven needs a different delivery system. Overall Happiness 4 out of 7.
