Stone – Smoked Porter with Chocolate & Orange Peel – 2 out of 7

Tons of slimy orange and brown globs in the bottom… Do I need to keep writing? You’ve already seen what flavors they’ve dumped into their marginally acceptable smoked porter beer, so I don’t know if I need to continue. The chocolate I smell in it reminds me of a scratch ‘n’ sniff sticker. The color is pretty dark (5.5) but not too dense and light can shine right through. Its undeniably Stone Smoked Porter with added flavors in it, so if you love their smoked porter, this might be your beer, but I doubt it. I will add one point for having the regular Smoked Porter the most ubiquitous smoked beer in the US, but the taste provided in the Chocolate and Orange rendition deducts a bunch of points. Ambivalence is a tough place to build a foundation on, so as I neared the end of the pour, it was easy for me to find disgust when a solid inch of brown and orange globs plopped out of this beer. I do find it telling that on the Stone website you’ll find a blame shifting “you asked for it” beer link. Final score 2 smokestacks out of 7.
