Brau Brothers Brewing – Bancreagie Peated Scotch Ale – 2 out of 7 smokestacks of happiness

image

Great beer, but not smoked. This beer looks, smells, and tastes like really good beer (and it is), but the “Peat And Cherry Wood Smoked Malt Blend” (I have no idea why Brau Brothers decided to capitalize every word) offer zero smokepower… Actually they offer 0.5 smokestacks of smokepower, but you get my point. Halfway through this beer and I got bit by the bitter bug. I decided there was something bitter in the taste and then I couldn’t shake the thought outta my mind. Whatever physical or metaphysical anomaly is baffling me, readers please note, the bitterness is faint, and may only slightly detract from your drinking experience. Brau Brothers should balance that bitterness out with a buncha smoke. Overall happiness – 2 out of 7 smokestacks.

An American interpretation of a Scotch ale, we use Golden Promise, caramel malts, and roasted barley to form the backbone of this beer, while two different kinds of smoked malt add a unique earthy and bacon-y quality. This beer demands some fine barbecue, and so do we. Bring some over.
