Triptych – Smoke Me Out – 3.5 out of 7 (do-over review)

I had to move to the garage for this one, so you may notice the unfamiliar hoodoo alter.

This review is a do-over for Triptych Brewing of Savoy, Illinois. SBM offers do-overs for everyone. This do-over started with a personal visit to the brewery where I had one Smoke Me Out at the bar and it was good, like 4.5 good (out of 7), which isn’t great, but it’s an improvement over their first attempt, so I took a crowler home to give the re-review 32 ounces of me time. A few days later I got this out of the fridge and after cracking it open, the second question I asked myself was “Where’d the smoke go?” The first question was “Where the hell’d all this foam come from?” This thing foamed up so bad Kid’N’Play woulda been jealous (yes, the flat top’s name was Kid’N’Play, and there were also two back-up dancer guys that hopped around a bunch.)  I taste a rich maltyness, notes of muddled peat, zero of the cherished Bamberg smoked malts. My old concern for Triptych was their ability to maintain consistency in their product, but with this review fast approaching the 3.0 point mark, I may have to acknowledge some consistency in their marginal quality product (yes, that “like 4.5 good” comment from above started to fade away fast like the smokepower in this beer during this review). And, as I review my hand written notes from this, it appears that my alter ego The Witchdoctor may have arrived and jotted down some deeply contemplative scribblings… “if a squirrel can take care of itself over winter, so can Triptych,” and “Sulphur mines,” which are included here for your own interpretation. Best of luck Triptych, overall happiness smokestacks up to a 3.5 out of 7.

Brewer Triptych Brewing (do-over review)
Beer Name Smoke Me Out
Brewer’s Description The first porter brewed at Triptych happens to be a Smoked Porter. Along with a traditionally inspired grain bill utilizing a blend of roasted malts, we used a significant proportion of smoked malt from Germany. The result is a dark, complex ale overflowing with notes of toast, roast, dark fruit and (of course!) smoke.
