Terrapin Beer Co. – Smoke on the Porter – Overall score 2.5 smokestacks out of 7

Thank you very much Terrapin for giving smoked beers a chance in your line up, now please get serious about making a good product. I don’t understand how any brewery can put out 60 plus beers (and 25 retired beers) and ever find the time to focus on refining any one of them into a great, desirable beer. The economist side of me understands all too well whats going on here, but I’m not drinking beer to better understand what a run on the bank looks like when a bunch of drinkers race to their liquor store. SmokeBeerMinistry is just looking for a smoky beer that reminds us of camping out in the home country.

Smoke on the Porter poured nicely, super dark (6 out of 7 smokestacks), with moderate viscosity, and a porter rich scent. But upon the first sip, this porter hits you with a fishy taste. This tastes ashy, malty, and yes again, fishy. The funkiness starts with the exhale and then lingers on the roof of your mouth. Funky. It has some bitterness to it too, enough to make your face scrunch up. It’s not good. Having said that, SBM would like to try Terrapin’s RoggenRauchBier (there’s always hope that something better is out there). Overall level of acceptance = a generous 2.5 out of 7 smokestacks.

Brewer Terrapin Beer Co.
Beer Name Smoke on the Porter
Brewer’s Description This October, Terrapin Beer Co releases the 28th installment of their side project series (and adds a nod to Deep Purple) with Smoke on the Porter. The beer is a Baltic Porter, brewed with smoked malt, and aged on French Oak Spirals. Subtle vanilla and chicory aromas give way to roasty flavors that highlight the dark malts in the beer. The smoke makes its largest contribution in a dry finish.
