Braustelle – Freigeist Hoppeditz – 4 out of 7

Here’s part 2 of the 5 Freigeist reviews. Hoppeditz is another beer that has the word smoke printed on the label, and was therefore rightfully delivered straight to the Ministry officials at SmokeBeerMinistry for a proper smoke rating. And while Hoppeditz will get tagged and grouped with other beers in the not a smokebeer category, it still comes off as a nice German beer. Some sourish notes wafted out before any other distinct emanations, including smoke, which was virtually non-existent. And the taste came out a little bitter and hoppy, but tasty. This beer is well balanced with sweetness swirling around in the glass too. This beer is a deep brown color although my hoodoo altar lighting fails to draw out the elements of translucency. This is a good beer, but I have to take issue with the “subtly smokey” written on the back. Subtly is quite the overstatement. I’d like to drink this in the motherland. Overall score 4 out of 7.
